Beginner cost check

What a first $100 crypto purchase costs — by exchange and funding route

A first purchase has up to three costs: getting money in (card, bank or P2P), the trade itself (a small percentage of the amount), and on "instant buy" or Convert, a spread built into the price. A referral code can only lower the trading fee; card, bank and deposit charges stay the same. Example: 100 USD by non-EU Visa on Bybit costs $3.05 card fee + $0.08 trading fee after the code discount = $3.13.

USDT and USDC are counted as 1 USD; amounts are USD-equivalents with no currency conversion. Trading fee = spot taker at base tier; DEX rows use their spot taker. The sending wallet's network fee and P2P price margins are listed as not included. Token discounts and VIP tiers are excluded.

Common questions

Is Convert really free?

No trading fee is charged on Convert at Binance, BingX, Bybit, Gate, but the price you are quoted includes a spread, so it can differ from the spot price. OKX publishes its spread: OKX 1.00% on Buy/Sell/Convert. Compare the quote with the spot price before confirming.

Which route is cheapest if I already have USDT?

Usually depositing USDT and placing a spot order: you pay the sending network fee plus the spot taker fee (0.04%–0.16% at base tier on the exchanges listed). Convert skips the trading fee but adds a spread that is often not published. Pick "Already have USDT" above to see each exchange.

Does the referral code change the card fee?

No. Published invitee benefits apply to the trading fee only (Binance 20% fee rebate; Bybit −20% fee discount (first 90 days); Gate 20% fee rebate; Hyperliquid −4% fee discount; MAX −20% fee discount (first 6 months); OKX −20% fee discount). Card, bank, P2P and deposit charges stay the same with or without a code.

What is a spread?

The spread is the gap between the price you are quoted and the market price. It is not listed as a fee, but it is still a cost: on a 1% spread, 100 USD buys about 1 USD less crypto.

Why do some rows say "Shown at checkout"?

Some exchanges do not publish a card fee; the card partner shows it on the payment screen. This page never counts a missing figure as zero, so the total lists that fee separately.
